Bowing of the Vocal Cords

Streght and quality of the voice can be decreased because of aging or Parkinson disease. Bowing appearance of vocal cords are observed during examination. Muscle weakness causes this appearance. Bowing prevents exact closure of the vocal cords, therefore air leakage is seen while speaking. Vocal fatigue and loss of strength in voice is observed.

Few people get benefit from speech therapy, most of them are treated with surgery. Fat or Cymetra is injected to the vocal cords for this purpose. Some people get benefit from “thyroplasty” operation. Silastic blocks are inserted to the vocal cords in this operation.

My persistent symptoms 31 May, 2013 - 12:14

I am writing to you from St. John's, Newfoundland (Canada). I have a sinus problem started in Nov 2008 upon working for more than a month in a gas plant. I did not have sinus problems prior to this date.

At that time, I may have been exposed to airborne asbestos and other irritants. In the place where I lived at that time, the Winter is so harsh. Temperature during Winter is normally at least 25 Cecilius below zero.
