“Reflux”, a word probably very frequently heard by us recently. “Reflux” has the meaning of escape of a content to opposite of the normal flow way in the medical language. For example reflux becomes in the urethras, in other words the urine escapes towards up and returns to the urethras, kidney while it should normally go down. In the fashion expression, the “reflux” faced by us recently, is used for the cases where the stomach’s contents escape to esophagus and throat. Its main name is “Gastroesophageal reflux”. The “Duodenogastroesophageal reflux”, in other words discomfort where the duodenum’s content escaped to esophagus and throat.
As a summary the contents that should be in stomach and in the duodenum escape to esophagus, throat, trachea, nasal passage. It also generates complaints according to the place where it escaped. It makes inflammation, immersion, irritation in throat. It causes to the vocal hoarseness, coughing, sudden breathing blockages if it escapes to the trachea. It might cause to the middle ear’s problems by affecting the Eustachian tube particularly in children if it escapes to the nasopharynx. It might cause to sinusitis when it escapes into the nasal passage.
It is seen that only 40 % of the people who have reflux have burning sensation in their chests, 25 % feel changes in their esophagus. In other words it is diagnosed by fixing the disease a bit and through the clinical findings. The reaction to the medicines is also a kind of diagnosis method. It is one of the recent claims that a protein called “pepsin” without having any acidic characteristic takes an important part in tissues' irritation.
